2003.12.11 Dublin Day Five
I apologize for the blurriness. This is my favorite trinket from the trip so far. It's Slimish Pure Irish Spring Water - Still. Water over here is either "sparkling" or "still". Still means "stagnant" to me... and Slimish? That's just plain perfect.
These are the lights at the outdoor skating rink near the pub from last night. I'm not sure how they keep the ice frozen when it never gets below freezing here.
This is the pub across the street from our hotel. I finished breakfast early this morning and went out to get some pics while it was light outside before our taxi arrived.
Looking down Lincoln Place towards Jennings Pub.
It says NO PARKING all over the place, yet people still park there. I bet you there will be someone parked in front of the sign when we get back tonight.
Down Lincoln towards the Lincoln Deli.
The melting clock on top of the Gingerman
That blue front in the background is the Lincoln Deli. Oscar Wilde's house is down the street a block at Merrion Square.
Mirror shot! My cheeks aren't that puffy - it's a cough drop, realy. Those are bags under my eyes though... stupid smokey pub.
We took a cab to work today because we both wanted to sleep in. I took about thirty pictures before this, and then dropped my camera. After putting the batteries back in, it insisted on formatting the card. So... you're missing a bunch of great pictures of little grocer and butcher shops... and blurry fences.
Dublin is covered in stone/brick walls topped with wrought iron. I decided to take a picture of all of them.
The billboards in Dublin move really fast. Try to keep up.
The brightly colored houses do as well. I don't know how people find their way home every night.
I'm pretty sure this is a library.
We were going at least forty miles an hour and yet, the church is still clear... interesting. Or not.
This was around 9:20 in the morning and the sun was just peeking up over the rooftops.
Jesus stands still for a picture, even though were were going really fast. Did you know that over 90% of Ireland is Roman Catholic? Now you do.
I love the signs on old shops here.
I also love the pedestrian streets, because here, I'm a pedestrian.
You can get a postcard that shows the multicolored doors of Dublin. I took this picture instead.
Hello, sun. Almost every street in the city looks interesting in some way. It's either interestingly dirty, depressing, vibrant, Victorian or busy - usually in some combination.
The place is littered with gigantic churches. This was Saint... ummm... we were driving way too fast to see the sign.
More blurry doors, and I didn't even drink last night!
Hey, look, an Irish subdivision! They're called "estates" here, which is a much better name for them, I think.
Blurry ivy, one of my favorites.
I think this is the mountains, but it might be an empty warehouse. I had the sun in my eyes.
Once you get out of the city, on the way to CityWest, the place is littered with gigantic car dealerships. Have I told you how much I love the cars here? They're great! I want a Fiat very badly.
Nissan has some crazy models here. There's one that's a blatant ripoff of the Bug, and some funny sub-compact SUVs that are just hilarious. I'l try to get pictures.
Mazda, BMW and Mercedes. They stole that off a GIGANTIC truck.
CompuSTORE because they wouldn't have a CompUSA, would they?
That's the Red Cow Hotel, which is supposedly very nice.
The other part of the Red Cow. That's the butt, I think.
Stupid lorry!! It kept getting in my way while I was trying to get a picture of the sun coming up over the Dublin mountains. And yes, traffic really was this bad.
Sunrise over traffic, the outskirts of Dublin.
Sunrise over mountains, little tiny cars and a stoplight.
Ahh, there we go. Mountains, trees, sunrise, dirty van window.
Attempt number two thousand and three.
Renault, also cute little cars.
Trees, sun, thankfully no cars.
The view the rest of the way was block by this disaster.
There's this short depressing stretch of road littered with garbage, followed by a couple...
Caravans, who I'm pretty sure created all that trash.
More wrought iron fencing.
A lovely pond by a golf course/development
The exit was very green... We drove in the grass (OK, no we didn't).
This either means we're going into a roundabout, or a washing machine in 50 meters.
The CityWest fishing hole... OK, maybe not. That's the CityWest Christmas tree though... They're 90% Roman Catholic, you know.
