Let's boost this post that #transgender people exist
It turns out, I really do need two four day weekends in a row after three weeks of work travel. I am so tired.
This is a bit theological for me, but is a beautiful examination of Mr. Rogers' theology and just how radical it is in the face of today's mainstream Christianity. I was in tears by the end, and you might be too: https://lifeisasacredtext.substack.com/p/the-radical-theology-of-mr-rogers?nthPub=121
I blogged again. This time, I just stole my notes from a work thing about positive psychology: https://lawver.net/2023/06/repurposing-notes-positive-psychology/
I dropped out of college after my freshman year, started working in tech support for AOL, discovered the web, and that was it.
I’m thinking about going back to school for a CS degree. Am I crazy? I feel like it’s a little crazy.
That was my first time seeing it and for a movie that came out when I was a small child, and that was definitely made for next to nothing, it’s very effective. Great gore gags, and the Campbell-ness is definitely there. Can’t wait to was Evil Dead 2 (which I also haven’t seen, but I’m a big fan of Army of Darkness).
The youngest and I are watching the original Evil Dead. The Bruce Campbell chin was strong from day one. Holy crap, you could shape steel on that thing. Majestic.
There is a large difference between embracing unknowing and embracing ignorance.
One admits a lack and a desire to learn, the other revels in that lack and celebrates it.
Embracing unknowing is the hallmark of some of the best engineers I've met in my career. They don't know, but they're sure going to find out somehow.

Good morning! Officially announcing #TrainJam this morning: what if we did a software retreat and put it on a train?
Runs Sept 18th leaving from Seattle and arrives the night before #StrangeLoop in St Louis
Why do so many trans women go into tech?
I think we heard that's where all the trans-sisters are.
It’s time to go home after a three week work trip. I think it was a week too long, and I have no idea what’s going on in the world. There’s a nerd fight in a cage? We’re cheering the deaths of rich people?
Maybe I’ll just not catch up and start over.
Have you done Elasticsearch administration at scale (~ PB+), live in the US, and are looking for a job?
If so please let me know. I don’t have a job rec to point to yet, but an adjacent team is starting to hire.

(Please boost)
If I lived in the UK, I’d go for The Great Treble and try to be a contestant on The Great:
* British Bake Off
* Pottery Throwdown
* British Sewing Bee
I don’t think I could really do it, but it would be fun to try.
I’ve been in downtown Denver for almost two weeks and I don’t understand the trend of people publicly “sharing” their music, frequently on bikes with large Bluetooth speakers. WHY?!
It's alternate versions of the songs from their last album, but I am LOVING this from Leftfield: https://open.spotify.com/album/4bpPgZ0AWlbKIE3aFai2I1?si=BD41v4JnSAasUrHPD3PZ1Q
My llm, ttok, strip-tags and symbex tools can now all be installed using Homebrew - details here: https://github.com/simonw/homebrew-llm
I got to write CSS for a WHOLE HOUR today and ... it's still my single favorite thing. It's so fun.
In case you missed it, this is probably the best (and most hilarious) plain-language explanation of what's in Trump's federal indictment. https://twitter.com/metroadlib/status/1667248343255220227
At a previous job, I had a friend who swore she hated country music. As a rebuttal, I created a playlist of alt-country, folk, Texas swing, Americana (and Canadiana? is that a thing?) to try to convince her to give it a shot. It worked. Now, I share it with you: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5NdWWG1mfUN6mGzwEj5cET?si=fd97a05405264015

The airport is a great place to people watch. So many types of travelers, and they’re all fascinating.
I want my taxpayer dollars to help trans people transition.
I want my taxpayer dollars to help people with unwanted pregnancies get abortions.
I want my taxpayer dollars to help people access HIV meds.
Retweet if you agree. Conservatives should not dominate this conversation.
When I'm in the office, my life is a butchered Winston Churchill quote: “Success is going from meeting to meeting without loss of enthusiasm.”
My people batteries are officially draaaaaained.
The office is so bright that my transitions lenses are kind of dark, so I'm looking EXTRA DORKY. Love it.
Went out to dinner with a coworker last night, and we got to talking about our religious upbringing and our eventual departure - and we both kind of settled on the same thing: there are two great commandments: love god and love your neighbor. Everything else is optional (or in the words of the rabbi: everything else is commentary).
Which I think is why I'm so fond of Buddhism: it gives a pretty good framework for loving kindness.
Is it a good time for some mashups? Yes, yes it is. https://kleptones.com/pages/album_ud.html
I played my first (and maybe last) game of pickleball today .. at work... in the office atrium. Nothing more startupy than that. (It was fun, even though I know I'll be feelingit tomorrow).
I got to help someone with some tricky CSS flexbox stuff, and it made my day. I love CSS so much.
Even if you don't read court opinions this preliminary injunction overruling FLs stupid ban on gender affirming care for minors is worth a read.
"The elephant in the room should be noted at the outset. Gender identity is real."
"Any proponent of the challenged statute and rules should put up or shut up... Dog whistles ought not be tolerated."
"If ever a pot called a kettle black, it is here. The statute and the rules were an exercise in politics, not good medicine."

The World’s Greatest Blogger and All Around Super Person, Jodi Chromey from iwilldare.com, needs some help, and it would be great if other old school bloggers showed up for her: https://gofund.me/ec050502
To the patients in the hospital across the street from where I’m staying: I’m sorry. I totally forgot that if I went to the kitchen for some water, that the blinds were open.
If the sight of my in my underwear has harmed your healing journey in any way, I am truly sorry.
If you liked it, you can show your appreciation by never ever sharing any pictures you may have taken before I freaked out and closed the blinds.
It seems that some parents worry about how to explain the existence of gay and trans people to their kids.
It’s trivially easy.
“Sometimes, men love men. Sometimes, women love women. Sometimes, people find out that although they have a man’s body, they’d be happier living as a woman - or the other way around.
All these people deserve to be happy and respected, just like you.”
And that’s really all there is to it.
If someone says "assume good intent" one more time, I’m going to start seriously doubting their intent in saying "assume good intent.”
I'm loving Mimestream so far. Now I want the Google Calendar version, because as much as I used to love Fantastical, it's missing things that force me to go back to the web, and ... I don't wanna.
update: we filled the position! thanks to all of you who shared this and expressed interest!

We're hiring someone to lead mozilla.social :mozlove:
Making this space safe and welcoming for all people is of utmost importance to us, and it starts with a product leader who is dedicated to driving positive change.
We're looking for people who are passionate about transforming online participation and enabling an engaging social experience that prioritizes health, safety and inclusivity
And I know that won’t happen because I’m senior enough, even as an individual contributor, that I’m now mostly solving people problems, and those require meetings. People, such problems they have/are/cause!
Some days, all the meetings are fine. Other days, I just want to write CSS in a cave and not talk to anyone. I need that setting in my calendar: no meetings - cave time.
