Hello from week two of . So far, I'm having fun not waking up to an alarm clock, doing nothing, and planning the Big Canadian Road Trip. Not going to work still feels really weird, but it's now abundantly clear than I need a break.

This song is GREAT. It's got serious hair metal energy, Bubba's voice is incredible, and it's a new-to-me take on coming out, especially in a song (check out all of his other stuff - runs the gamut, always clever): youtu.be/PTwqdDkFaMk?si=rW5fl4

It's always interesting to me how, when white men dominate an industry or field, it's because of merit.

But when we (meaning white men) no longer dominate, it's because of quotas, or some form of discrimination.

What's the saying? When you're used to being privileged, equality feels like discrimination?

I'm pretty sure Jimmy Carter and my grandfather read this and embraced it early in life. It's good advice and and something to aspire to. And, as a side benefit, everyone will be able to tell that you are not a Republican.

I finished Radical Acceptance a week ago, and am still mulling over the idea of “unconditional compassion” - it seems almost an impossible thing to do, and even harder to do 100% of the time.

Buuuuut, feels like a worthy thing to work on.

I suck at cards so I’m trying out “the rally cap of shame”.

This column from @annaleen is short and perfect. I think for people who aren’t journalists, the Fediverse has tons of potential for people to right-size their own communities, and set their own rules. We need to make it easier to run and manage things, but the potential is super exciting.

Blast from the past... Woodhands! Dancer is a GREAT song. I remember hearing them for the first time around the time Holy Fuck showed up with Lovely Allen. Enjoy (a song that's too exciting to be played at 6AM, but I'm unfortunately awake, so... here you go): open.spotify.com/track/07LeMww

Also, I’d forgotten (how?!) that creating art, even bad silly art, with other people is fun as hell.

My mother-in-law appreciated all of the pickle art we made for her birthday and definitely felt like a big dill.

Love this graphic

Decorative text reading ‘Radicalized by Basic Decency’ in white serif font on a black background, surrounded by illustrated wildflowers including orange and pink poppies, white daisies, purple lavender sprigs, and various other colorful blooms with green leaves and stems in a folk art style.

I’ve been listening to Radical Acceptance by Tara Brach - it’s really good, especially as a practical guide to starting mindfulness. But, it has the same problem a ton of other books of this type do - it’s full of woo woo that’ll turn off the people that need it the most.

Maybe that’s a use for AI - rewrite this as if it was Joe Rogan’s podcast.

All for the pickle themed birthday party on Sunday.

We’re (for a reason I don’t remember) are doing a pickle themed party for my mother in law this weekend and we’re sitting at the kitchen table making tons of cut out pickles to make a garland.

The last week at a job is exhausting... emotionally. Work-wise, I have nothing to do. Don't tell anyone, but I've played quite a bit of Civ6 while keeping an eye on Slack.

The emotions part is all the goodbye conversations and making sure things are tied up and handed off (which I did last week, which leaves this week REALLY empty).

I'm just now, with two days left, starting to think about how I'm actually going to spend my time. First up: a big ass road trip!

View on Mastodon

I'm not sure what I did, but I broke Apple Maps. It did fine with the Seattle => Home bit, but when I added the first half of the trip, it got very confused and forgot how to get to Minneapolis.

A list of cities in Apple Maps: (My Home), Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, Sudbury, Thunder Bay, Calgary, Vancouver (BC), Seattle, Minneapolis, Kansas City, and back to My Location (at home). The error message is: "Directions to Minneapolis aren't available on this route."

Alright, this is my last week at Gusto. I know they don’t hire everywhere, and it’s in the US and it’s capitalism, but I can do bupkis about it.

What I can do is refer you if you want. If there’s a job on Gusto.com you want to apply to, send me your resume and an (optional) cover letter and I’ll put you in the system.

This offer expires when my employment does, on July 18th (I know that’s two weeks from now, but I’m trying to put a dent in my “flexible” PTO before I flee).

My work email is my first name . last name @ gusto.com.
