They’re now predicting 1-2 inches of snow. The closest snow plow is probably 300 miles away? Good thing we have lots of coffee, popcorn, leftover Chinese food, and books.
Y’all. It’s snowing in Savannah. We’ve lived here for 17 years and this is the third or fourth time it’s snowed. It probably won’t stick, but it might be icy tomorrow. Hooray for having nowhere to go!
Of course I shaved off my beard and hair on the coldest day of the year when we might get snow. My timing is amazing.
But the beard was tickling my nose and ears and it was time.
i made a fucking website and so can you

This is an amazing read about resistance.
So many amazing lines in this piece, but one that stands out:
"We proved that you can bring a trillion-dollar security apparatus to its knees with one well-aimed rubber cock."

The coffee guys and I were talking about all the things morning and how scary and momentous everything feels all the time - but that for the first time in weeks, it feels like the cracks are starting to show and a little bit of light is showing through.
It reminds me of a conversation I had with the kid this weekend about why WW2 movies are so comforting for me - because I know the good guys win in the end. The problem with living through history is we don't know who's going to win. All we have is hope and doing the best we can with that hope, putting it into whatever work we can do to try to make things better.
The Churro of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
This powerful piece by Topsy is located right outside the Swedish Medical Center (First Hill Campus) in Seattle, Washington. You can see the hospital's distinctive blue and white cross logo on the building in the background!
I just signed up to take an intro to knitting class on February 12th! Be on the lookout for shitty fiber art coming soon! #makeShittyArt
I love not having any analytics on my blog. It's like one of my favorite quotes (that I got from a friend, Coco Papy, and I have no idea who she got it from), "Other peoples' opinion of you is none of your business."
It's absolutely freeing. I'll try to do best I can to be as kind as I can be in every situation, apologize when needed, listen to feedback, and make things right when I can. The rest is trivia.
Ordering this Melt the Ice Hat today!
"In the 1940’s, Norwegians made and wore red pointed hats with a tassel as a form of visual protest against Nazi occupation of their country...As purveyors of traditional craft, we felt it appropriate to revisit this design.
All proceeds from the sale of this pattern go to local immigrant aid organizations who will distribute the funds to those impacted by the actions of ICE."
Omg heartbreaking 💔

A rallying cry for the era.
“Please get the truth out about our son. He was a good man.”
I have finished my first book of 2025 (and actually remembered to mark it finished on The StoryGraph!). The Bhagavad Gita wasn’t the easiest read, but it was on my bookshelf and I hadn’t read it, so, now I have. ✅
At the coffee shop. In all your vigil stories. Said another way, "wherever you've been, you can be here now."
This morning, I donated blood and then went to the grocery store where I impulse bought some fried chicken so… I’m eating my feelings today.
In my defense, my feelings are delicious.
I watched the season finale of Star Trek Discovery season four this morning; and when (spoiler) Stacey Abrams shows up as the president of Earth and it fucked me up.
We could have chosen a better path, but we didn’t. Collectively, more of my neighbors chose to either vote for a known racist asshole with authoritarian leanings - a convicted felon, or not vote at all, and here we are.
And I don’t know how to forgive them or even talk to them about how we move past it.
But, the most important thing today? Fixing my twitter archive so search works so I could search for "poop" and find this gem: https://tweets.lawver.net/233349219975565312/
I wrote a thing about switching to eleventy (11ty?) and it ended up taking a left turn at AI. It's a long one, but it's my blog, I can do what I want, right? https://lawver.net/2026/01/a-shiny-new-bloggy-home/
A little Saturday morning coffee-time hacking and https://lawver.net has year and month archives back, a page of the other places to find me on the web (powered by eleventy navigation) and a couple of other minor tweaks.
Now I might write an actual blog post?!
New invention: The AI Notetaker Taker. Your AI Notetaker joins a meeting. My AI Notetaker Taker joins a meeting, follows your "stop" link, and stops your notetaker.
Let the notetaker taking escalation begin.
I love how supportive this community is of people creating art. It’s inspiring and I hope I can pay it back. ❤️
First thing with Procreate! Traced a selfie and played around with trying to color it… definitely scratches the art making itch! I’ll keep going… goal is to do a bunch of little illustrations for the blog and turn it into a design. No idea what that will be yet. But it’s fun!
I'm trying to do less watching TV and making more art - so tonight, I'm doing my first Procreate (the iPad painting app, not the "making babies" act) tutorial. My "make shitty art in 2026" goal is totally happening!
We could all use something a little unexpected. If you’ve never seen it, don’t look it up, just go to Prime Video, search for 8 out of 10 cats does countdown, go to season 11, episode 2 and watch.
You’ll be happier and laughing until you cry by 32:50.
Now, go!
(For US folks. For UK folks, please don’t spoil it. For everyone else, I have no idea if it’s available where you are)
I got complimented on my beard yesterday, so... maybe it's not as feral as I thought.
And your chaser: The Avalanches "Running Red Lights" starring the incredible Erik Cavanaugh: https://youtu.be/nsjQ3Gblzys?si=lguobYN1uUZH8OZ6
Today's mopey dad song is Clem Snide's gorgeous "Roger Ebert" - a live version I found from 2022: https://youtu.be/hVT81VVkaCE?si=eqlACmOLiO9FDUA8
And thank you to everyone who alerted me to my fumble fingered delivery - fixed it!
If you’re a white person, especially one who grew up in the US, and specifically in the South, and emphatically if you were raised Christian, I can’t recommend “Understanding and Dismantling Racism” by Joseph Barndt highly enough! (Sorry, originally fumble fingered that I couldn’t recommend it, but I can!)
It’s written with you in mind, and is about the gentlest introduction to the systems of racism and will help you get around the “immune response” we all have (that isn’t your fault - but we all need to learn to overcome).
And when you’re ready to go deep, “The Half Has Never Been Told” has, as they say, all the receipts. It is the most damning book I’ve ever read. It will change you, Southern or not (Yankees, you invented Jim Crow and profited the most from slavery, so put that smug away).
RE: https://hachyderm.io/@mekkaokereke/115923027319961725
It can take a lifetime to accept that our education in US schools was full of outright bullshit and a lot was left out, accept the truth of our country’s history, white supremacy, white privilege, and our obligation to work to dismantle it.
The Tea Party, and now MAGA (and I’m sure there were movements that came before - mostly unnamed - but “The Lost Cause” is definitely related), are white supremacy’s immune response to truth.
I love my massage therapist. She’s a Chinese immigrant, and we’re about the same age. Every session, I learn some crazy new fact about her life before coming to Savannah. Today’s? She was a professional cyclist in China starting at the age of 11!
RE: https://mastodon.social/@The_Whore_of_Blahbylon/115917963665937607
More of these please.
Ta-da! My twitter archive is finally online! Only took three-something years: https://tweets.lawver.net/ #actuallyLazyWeb #lazyHumanToo #tweets #fuckElonMusk #noWaitNoOneShouldEverHaveSexWithElonMuskAgainEver
(Although there are a bunch of open PRs going back to 11/22 that haven't been reviewed)
Alright, I went ahead and did it... npm run import and build is working!
https://github.com/tweetback/tweetback/pull/144
I didn't finish the build because I want to do fix that allows the images to work since I deleted my twitter account over three years ago, and those things are long gone.
So tweetback hasn’t been updated in four years and has dependencies that no longer exist. I forked it and will try to get it in a working state tomorrow. 🤞🏻
I can’t believe this is a real place.
Aaaaand, I’m spent. It’s Kevie the Veggie time!
It’s the little things you forget, like a favicon, and validating your feed. Both of those are fixed, www works and I added a canonical link that points to the top level domain for everything.
I think I might be missing a robots.txt, but now I’m on to recabling things now that the switch from cable to fiber is done.
Turns out, switching jobs has me thinking about switching all kinds of stuff!
Alright... https://lawver.net. www needed to be a CNAME for Digital Ocean to be happy so that's now making its way around the internets, so will work eventually, but... it’s... live? Maybe? Is it for you? Is it, like, OK? The design is basically identical to what I had before (extremely basic), but I have PLANS.
DNS records are moved and spreading around the internet. I didn't count on Digital Ocean taking so long to “confirm my ownership" of the domain so everything is broken until they're done and they do things and set up the SSL (still amazed that's a thing that “just works" now for the most part).
I'll write a thing about it at some point... still lots I want to do, like add comments (especially import the old ones), site search, a less boring design, and lots of other wilder stuff, but it's good enough to impulsively pull the trigger!
Well, it's happening, which means everything is currently propagating and totally broken!
Yeah, I thought I would wait until next week to launch the bloggy blog move, but it might happen today since I woke up at 3AM for no good reason, and now I have coffee and well, what else am I gonna do? I've even got the thing to deploy.
I think I might be a little mad with eleventy power... now I'm planning on finally putting my twitter archive online, finally self-hosting photo galleries, asides, quotes... I CAN SELF-HOST THE WORLD! MWA-HAHAHAHAHA!
Eleventy is super fun. Thanks, @jgarber, for the suggestion! In just a couple of hours this morning (while also switching over our wifi network and setting up a laptop for a friend), I've got all my posts imported, tags working, slugs for all the old underscore posts so I don't need redirects, and a bunch of cleanup done.
Another weekend and I might be able to actually switch this thing!! #weekendHacking #personalProjects #blogging #hashtagOverload #eleventy #openSource
Not bad for a Saturday morning. Not ready to flip a switch or anything, but pretty soon, I'll be moving from Wordpress => Eleventy!
Henry Winkler has been arrested. The SEC have just released a statement alleging that for years, the actor has been running a Fonzie Scheme
I commit to create my own shitty art in 2026.
It's a shiny new blog post called: A 50 Year-Old Dad Confronts 2026
https://lawver.net/2026/01/a-50-year-old-dad-confronts-2026/
I'm going through my Spotify-era "favorites" playlists to try to train the Apple Music algorithm to suggest better music. This is... a weird thing to have to do? But, you know what, going through the last 13 years of music I've liked enough to throw into a bucket has been lovely.
RTJ CU4TRO is a pretty good alternative... totally forgot it existed until just now. It's definitely going in the queue!! https://music.apple.com/us/album/rtj-cu4tro/1647637939
Not really a better album to listen to to wake up than RTJ4.
Dear skinny people, are you cold, like, all the time? I don't have enough hoodies for this.
Gummi cherries are so good. Better than cola bottles or bears (the candies - I've never eaten an actual bear).
Nothing like showing up for a call early, staring at myself on the screen and realizing, wow, I really need a haircut.
We say "pretty please" but don't have a similar modifier for "thank you." I propose "a beautiful thank you."
The thrill of that last QA pass before you share a feature with the whole damn company. AUGH! NERVES!
This song is really something. https://youtu.be/E-z9djgthqE?si=16IEOzZLWmPwVbc4
It turns out, hitting a weight loss goal is a lot like shipping a project - the last 10% took a huge chunk of time, but I did it! I've officially lost 100 pounds!! I'm now only 42 pounds away from my goal weight, something I thought was completely unattainable when discussing it with my doctor four years ago. But here we are. It's in sight.
RE: https://mindly.social/@SecondStix/115878983047991476
Shocked. I’m shocked that they have a history of a lack of discipline and a lack of accountability. Shocked.
Motion to rename ICE the Scared Boys. All in favor, boost.
I really wish streaming services, or better yet, Apple TV had a preference to say to always play videos in their original language and turn on English subtitles (unless it’s in English AND (live OR standup comedy)).
I’m willing to compromise on the if statement part, but come on.
I think I officially like Bluefin (https://projectbluefin.io/), expecially for setting something up for non-developer users. I don't think it's for me as a developer, at least not yet.
The proof will be if my friend has a successful trip with this laptop I'm throwing together for him with Bluefin on it. We're doing a "training" session next weekend where I'll show him that things in Gnome are pretty much where they are on a Mac just slightly different, and he'll still have Chrome with all of his extensions and passwords (one step at a time into the open source world, y'all).
I'm going to try to get him hooked up with PWA's installed as apps for Apple things like Notes. I think Messages is the only thing he'll really miss.
And then I get to teach him how to use a VPN (I'll loan him mine).
RE: https://wandering.shop/@terrymatz/115868328699409089
Well, now I have to learn to knit.
I think the lesson is… put the phone away at least two hours before bed. LOL, we’ll see.
I should have waited until tomorrow to read this. It’s true, and I don’t know what to do about it. https://www.mcsweeneys.net/articles/what-youre-watching-isnt-what-youre-really-watching
Hi. It's Friday. Treat yourself with a trip to the Trench Coat Museum. It's small, but the music is pretty fucking great. https://youtu.be/7P0YpeMPZ9g?si=F3frF6QSv1CyEg2d
RE: https://mstdn.social/@lowqualityfacts/115866366777475860
I might just buy a stack of these and start handing them out to everyone I know.
RE: https://sunny.garden/@georgepenney/115862056276640251
The tiny mermaid kaiju was my daughter at that age. I can hear the roar.
@404mediaco is one of the subscriptions I feel best about. They do great reporting at the intersection of government and tech and punch so above their weight. They've started the year super strong.
I'm talking to my designer at work about tweaks and fine details in a widget and I've missed this so much.
I think it's why I didn't get anywhere with my personal projects during my "accidental sabbatical" - I love the teamwork, collaboration and back and forth of making things "right" not the lone ranger building things on my own.
I’m overwhelmed by a bunch of different things, probably some of the same things you are.
So I’m crying watching people cry over pottery on Great Pottery Throwdown and committing to read less news and make more art.
Because, fuck, things are bleak and I feel powerless over all but the tiniest bits of it.
DHS Is Lying To You
At least four videos show what really happened when ICE shot a woman in Minneapolis on Wednesday. DHS has established itself as an agency that cannot be trusted to live in or present reality.

I want to be a boat too. Boats are cool.
I've gone back and forth between being an individual contributor and a manager a few times and I'm back as a full time developer and ... IT IS SO MUCH FUN.
"Welcome to your 2025 Recrap! Here's all the ways you screwed up, disappointed and otherwise failed in the last twelve months. Enjoy!"
I've now installed five or six different linux distros over the last few months and all of them have the same disappointing problem of maximal notifications enabled by default. It's super annoying and sometimes not intuitive to disable them, especially if you want to do so selectively.
It's easier to just turn on Do Not Disturb and carry on.
I got a 49" curved monitor and WOW can I fit a lot of distractions on this thing!
The nice folks at @ghost are hiring for a product designer
- remote
- to $180k
- 4 day workweeks
- actually solid looking benefits
Put in a good word for me if you get this job?
I think that sometimes the secret to survival is figuring out what food pairs best with your emotions and just going with it.
New job means new tools! Just used CoScreen for the first time and it's SO GOOD. It reminds me a lot of how much better Tuple was than anything else when it came out - that's how much better CoScreen is than Google Meet or Zoom.
Hey linux friends! I have an older tech-averse friend who's traveling to Europe next month, who has a laptop with a not-great battery. I'm thinking about loaning him one of my "workshop" laptops with a linux distro on it just for checking email, flights, etc.
Update to add: he's a lifelong Mac user, so the more Mac-like it feels, the better!
What's the current best bet for a de-Googled ChromeOS or similar? #linux #lazyweb #computering
Just did my first front-end PR at my new job. It's probably been... over a year since I did any front-end stuff professionally? I survived!
I'm sorry, but Kevin isn't available now as he's still in denial. If you'd like to leave a message, he'll ignore it until he's good and ready to accept reality.
Hey @jgarber, remember this? I was feeling bad about my eroding front-end skills and then remembered that way back in 2008, ficlets won the 2008 SxSW Web Awards for CSS (99% for Jason's work). I totally forgot that I put the acceptance speech on Vimeo! I was SO nervous and it shows. Also, the video is really blurry, because it was 2008.
@kpl I’d recommend getting the newest edition of this book: https://www.freelanceandbusiness.com/ . Which covers everything you need to know about starting a business. Everything.
I’m at 69% on my current book… nice.
I’m more polyignorant, really.
2025 was a shit show of absurdity. But in the end, is there anything you feel proud of? Any moments of inner pride? Goals reached? Or soft moments of peace that you'd like to share? I will post mine in the comments and please tell me about your shining moments of clarity.

A German hacker known as "Martha Root" dressed as a pink Power Ranger and deleted a white supremacist dating website live onstage
This happened during the recent CCC conference.
Martha had infiltrated the site, ran her own AI chatbot to extract as much information from users as possible, and downloaded every profile. She also uncovered the owner of the site. She has published all of the data.

They should change the inscription on the Supreme Court building: “Justice for thee but not for me”
If I was in Congress right now, the impeachment papers would already be in.
I can't believe I've never heard this remix of Portishead's Glory Box, but it's INCREDIBLE. It's so good I giggled, which is about the highest praise I can give a song. https://youtu.be/uHKTuMup36A?si=vxcsqABxUnpI57Zd
I'm most of the way through creating the API for my #Georgia state legislature tracking.
There's still some cleanup, but it provides:
- list of sessions
- chamber summaries
- committee info
- legislation info
- votes
I need to tie legislation to authors/sponsors. And then create a website for it. After that I will add RSS feeds and, finally, Fediverse bots to let you follow legislation and/or members in your feed.
It's just the API currently, and nothing is set in stone. You can see the FastAPI docs here: https://api.gacracker.us/docs
If you have suggestions or notices bugs, please let me know.
My weekly coffee group where I have breakfast with four guys over the age of 70 continues to surprise. I was telling them that because we couldn't watch TV on Sundays growing up, I'd read our entire set of encyclopedias at least once, maybe twice, between the ages of 7 and about 12. They were shocked!!! I was shocked they were shocked.
#LazyWeb I want a service like JustWatch but for sports with air times for streaming services I subscribe to. Apple Sports keeps telling me about games I can't watch, which is _awesome_ and even the otherwise amazing FotMob can't filter by "things I have access to view w/out 🏴☠️."
(I know this isn't what FotMob does, so it's not a dig, but it literally does everything else football-related, why not this?)
It’s crazy how little I know about UK politics with Mock the Week gone. Are there any good quiz panel shows I should go find?!
