If you're arrested in Illinois protesting Trump's illegal war against Iran, I can represent you pro bono. Email me at [email protected]. As always, I will take as many cases as I can.
My son, a friend and I went to an introductory pottery class this morning and for two hours, we got our hands dirty, learned new things, laughed at our mistakes and made something. Highly recommended. Also, my president is a hateful idiot and I’m sorry.
I'm geeked Monarch is back. Big monsters! On the TV! Yeah, let's go!

Dude, there were...
Bales of cocaine fallin' from low-flyin' planes. I don't know who done dropped 'em but I thank 'em just the same. (wrong song, but maybe a better song?)
Don't be evil. Be naughty.
We're trying something new. If you're in Savannah and looking for something to do on Pi Day, come hang out with some nerds and build something, or think about building something, or maybe resurrect an old laptop by putting linux on it! https://www.meetup.com/techsav/events/313528699/

First came the mouse jigglers. Now, we shall build the Copilot ticklers.
I've used "strugglebus" more this week than I have in the last six months. It might be a sign of something.

WOPR: have it your way*
* where “have it your way” can only mean “thermonuclear war” - would you like to play a game?
I’m so glad I saved the Momofuku vinegar pickle recipe now that the Lucky Peach site’s gone. They are ridiculously good, and so easy to make. (I think it’s online other places but if you can’t find it let me know and I’ll post it)
Don't get me wrong, I love the song. I'm listening to it right now. But I can't believe people made this.
I know they used real instruments, but The English Beats' "Save It For Later" doesn't sound real. It's not real. It's just, unreal, somehow. I feel this way about some other 80's songs, they just don't sound real.
No idea why, but I've been up for over three hours already, and now I'm at my desk doing things. My last meeting in in 9 and a half hours. Sigh.
Two recipes and I’m a little scared. I might try a vinegar or garum first. More research ahead.
I’ve made my own sriracha (it didn’t really work - it tasted like pain). I think I want to try soy sauce next. I guess I need to find a friendly neighborhood soybean farmer and a recipe?
Viewing the SOTU this evening?
Humorous/sarcastic/all replies are welcome! Please boost for exposure. 🙂
Why can’t you come to work today?
I’m mostly made of water!
(No idea why, but my wife and I both this this is really funny and it’s our new excuse for everything)
Hi. I am a human bean. Inside this leathery pod, I am a terrified fragile baby just trying to make it through the day. Please be gentle.
Pork shoulder is the best. Throw it in a roasting pan in a 300 degree oven for five hours and it's not only delicious, it makes your house smell AMAZING for all five hours. You can also make it into any cuisine. Red roast pork for bao, cochinita pibil, for cuban sandwiches, or for pasta... you name it, it's infinitely flexible.
Yes, that's what we're having for dinner, and my house smells AMAZING right now.

Why do I know that a day has 86,400 seconds? Because a million years ago, I build my team a calendar app, and I had to do a lot of time math in Tcl, and there were ZERO time helpers, so I built my own. I used to know how many seconds were in a week, but that memory's long gone.
Finally finished incorporating my mastondon archive into my blog (it's the first one - it's 1/10th the size of my twitter archive, so figured I'd do it first). Right now:
- They show up on individual blog posts as things also posted on that day.
- They show up on the month archive pages
- I've also merged the tags, so the tag pages are merged with blog posts first and then toots!
- They'll also show up in search results.
It's alive! I need to set up a schedule to run the import script and commit the changes, and I really need to spend some time on the design - it's OK, but it's not... pretty. https://lawver.net

I'm very disappointed the internet didn't tell me that Mock the Week is back.
Well, that was much easier on my Mac. I'm now trapped in my office, but I've got the boilerplate Tauri app running! Now I guess I have to, like, do something. Damn.
Ran into a weird Tauri / Ubuntu 25 library thing I don't feel like fighting, so stuck at the starting line for now. I should go do laundry or something anyway.
I lied. I just installed Tauri and am starting on it! Wheee!!
#TIL that a “garth” is an enclosed garden, usually in a cloister. So, that’s what I’m calling my desktop app - because it’s your data from all the evil social networks “protected” but then allows you to “garden” it and do stuff with it! I registered domain names and everything… which means I’ll NEVER EVER build it now, but finding the word was fun.
Just finished The Swedish Connection on Netflix. It’s really good - and based on a true story of using a bureaucracy against itself to do the right thing.
People. Who. Aren't. Good. With. Technology. Deserve. Security. And. Privacy. Too.
I had coffee with a recent grad who really likes C, C++ and Fortran. Those are all completely foreign to me. Can you think of any open source projects that would be open to having some help with open bugs, tests or documentation?
Hey bros, don't assume the women on your team want to do emotional labor and don't ask them to do it. If you're asking for volunteers for things like planning parties or team events, ask everyone. And if your team is asked to help plan, raise your damn hand.
But this song came on, which is just about the perfect "I'm on call fixing things" song: https://youtu.be/sKKvQW0bJzE?si=MUNxSZOhKJhcspKV
I'm riding pager for REAL for the first time in five years and I kind of like it in a nostalgic way, but not sure I love it in a "this is my life now" way.
If there was a desktop app that allowed you to import the exports from various online services (twitter archive, Google Takeout, etc) and do "stuff" with them, which name would resonate with you? (boost for reach, pretty please)
I love this reminder that Joshua Idehen is a poet first and not just the guy who did that funny political system song about your mom: https://youtube.com/shorts/HbixzATQXcM?si=Ej58x4jTGkJXgQWD
The kid and I are watching Very Important People. We’re almost to the end of season two and we’re beating ourselves up for sleeping on this show for so long. It’s so much fun and Vic is such a great weirdness wrangler as the host. Dropout is the best, and we don’t even watch Dimenson 20!
And I know this documentary is serious, but when is the last time you thought about pneumatic tubes?
I’m watching the Seymour Hersh documentary (Cover Up) on Netflix and I got really excited when he talked about putting stories in pneumatic tubes at the newspaper.
I want to buy an old building just to have pneumatic tubes and then all my friends can have offices and we can just send each other dumb little presents in the tubes.
What would you send? I think I’d send a Matchbox car and a Special Dark.
I've been thinking about building my first desktop app, and one of the ideas is giving people something to do with all of the various "download your data" options from LinkedIn, Google, your Twitter Archive, etc. I know there's the Twitter Archive 11ty project, but I thought there was an effort several years ago for something like this but I can't think of the name or who was involved - does it ring any bells? I'd love to talk to folks who've tried this before - especially if there are wheels here that don't need reinventing that I haven't found yet.
The idea would be something normies can use that gives them the instructions for how to request their archive and then a place to drag and drop it, a way to sync it for storage they already have, and something to DO with that data (digital memoir, some publishing it somewhere option, etc).
No one felt like cooking last night so we did our “savory breakfast” Valentines dinner tonight! Waffles with green onions, black pepper and cheese, spicy maple syrup, chicken tenders, bacon, and crispy eggs. High fives all around.
Wow, I had been running out of patience with Yegge’s uncritical #GenAI boosterism, but this is epic: “The AI Vampire.”
As usual with Yegge, it could have been edited down to half its size, but go read it anyhow. I’m going to adopt that “AI Vampire” phrase and start using it, a lot.
I’m finally watching the adaptation of Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell and it’s delightful. Love it.
It holds up really well other than some of the CGI. It’s still some of the best air combat (that’s kind of like submarine combat?) ever on TV. We’re almost done with the first episode.
Definitely worth revisiting if you haven’t watched it in a while!
Introducing the son to the Battlestar Galactica miniseries. 🤞🏻
It's Saturday morning, which means it's time to blog! This one's about a bunch of different converging threads: https://lawver.net/2026/02/thoughts-on-a-new-old-web/
RE: https://wandering.shop/@charliejane/116002943188902447
This bundle is still live. I got it for my sister for her birthday - it's got something for everyone. She's going to read the Unstoppable series to my niece, Automatic Noodle with my nephew, and The Terraformers is all for her. Seriously, there's so much greatness in here, don't miss it!
I only really get excited about big dumb ideas… so… in order to get myself to exercise… I’m announcing that I’m OFFICIALLY in training to compete in SOME GODDAMN event at the 2027 National Senior Games! I have to qualify this September at the Georgia state senior games in … again … some GODDAMN event. Maybe I’ll see you there! #goddammmit
Today I dealt with a student using “gay” as an insult.
To be fair to the kid, I see grown adult men using gay as an insult right here on the fediverse.
(Especially when attempting to insult male politicians that they don’t like.)
Men on here are too often homophobic and I’m tired of it.
It’s not an insult to be queer and if you use gay/queer as a joke/insult then you are part of the problem and not here for equality.
Your words have impact.
Do better.
It also makes me want to wander the house yelling "shithouse!" which probably isn't great, but... it is funny.
I love this song. So angry, so shouty, so catchy, so sweary: https://youtu.be/OV5xTptjB1g?si=YqKkhC1u3uW43jQa
I love a song with a good "woo" in it: https://youtu.be/a5vwfqJgUao?si=Slc_2xW11EHFq7fQ
A long time ago, a team I lead wrote horrible commit messages, so I started a contest and we all had to write our commit messages as haiku. Our commit messages were MUCH better after that, and a lot more fun.
Savannah finally has a big Asian grocery store - it's called Enson and I love it. They have a weird Big Lots-style stocking policy though, which means I get to try lots of different stuff, but there's no way to predict what they'll have any time I go.
But, the latest thing I've fallen in love with is Nongshim's Soon Vegan Ramen. It's ridiculously good. It's less spicy than their other ramen (like Black or Golden), and has these thinly sliced mushrooms in it that are incredibly good. Just found it online and it's not crazy expensive, so, now I can get it even when Enson is being fickle.
And you can get it too! Mmm mmm, good. Two enthusiastic slurps way up.
RE: https://sauropods.win/@futurebird/116060376560122130
This thread is so good. I’ve been thinking a lot about how we used to run Railsbridge and codebar in’s Savannah, and I’m excited about starting over with the Explorers and Builders Guild next month at the library.
This thread is a great reminder that coding for teaching is very different from coding for fun or for work (though some principles should be similar - it should be easily understood by any engineer on the team!).
Mushroom flavored dark soy is the absolute business. It’s so good at making everything better.
Yeah, I love being back with United Healthcare. First prior authorization for a really boring prescription, first denial.
Git thing I always forget about, and then feel really smart when I remember it: https://git-scm.com/docs/git-maintenance
I really need to change my relationship to reading the news. It’s all too much too often - and I don’t get notifications or other nonsense and it’s still too much. Time to move the news apps more than one click away, and I don’t know, go live in a faraday cage.

Folks, if you're over 45 in the US: GET A COLONOSCOPY (I don't know what the guidelines are in other countries).
It's much easier and cheaper than you think to start your own Mastodon server:
- You don't need to be a tech nerd and you don't need any hardware. You can use a "managed hosting" service which does all the hosting and techy stuff for you behind the scenes.
- You don't need to be rich, managed hosting starts from around 5 to 10 euros per month including everything.
I've done a non-technical step-by-step guide to creating your own Mastodon server at:

Did you know Apple has patented proprietary technology to always choose exactly the wrong folder when you hit "Save as"
Commas in JSON are a design flaw and the cause of 99% of merge conflicts.
I love it when I do some crappy design, sleep on it, and wake up with something elegant as hell to do in the morning. So much better. Ahhhh, I should just call it a day now.
Just came up in my 2024 favorites re-listen. Too Many Zooz + Moon Hooch bring you A LOT OF HORNY (the brass kind) GOODNESS: https://youtu.be/NccUx5P74jA?si=0XSR67Wut6jSdKwb
Real talk: I think we start looking like we doubt ourselves more as we get older and build expertise because we understand the risks associated with the things that we promise. We become more cautious, as our bosses burn us with their overconfident promises.
I'm not asking you to lie. I'm asking you to carry yourself with the confidence you deserve to have with your domain expertise.
Good night, Canada. You’re swell.
Let’s all start calling X, FB, IG, TikTok, etc the “legacy corporate social media”. Make them sound sad and old and behind the times.
#TIL: The National Senior Games are in Tulsa next summer. You only have to be 50 to participate. The Georgia games to qualify are in September, and I've already convinced my coffee guys (I think) to sign up. We need to pick a sport that we think we can dominate in - so far, bocce is in the lead, mostly so our team name can be Get Your Balls Out.
The inaugural meeting of The Explorers & Builders Guild will be held at the Islands Library on March 14th. Let's GO!!!
I signed my little nonprofit to be an event sponsor at our local library. Thinking of doing some kind of "build your own thing" morning there on a Saturday morning once a month and see who shows up.
The dream of a truly local DIY internet's gotta start somewhere and I can't think of a better place than my local library.
I’m tired of a lot of other things. This probably isn’t at the top of the list. Sorry. This was momentary pique. I need a nap.
I’m tired of the media expecting young people to be more mature, intelligent and respectful than the president of my country. Trump called a guy like a third his age a loser.
No one should ask anyone anything else other than asking every elected Republican, “your guy is calling our olympians losers while they’re representing us. Are you tired of defending him yet?”
Ok, they could ask Trump if he has any shame or if he’s willing to apologize for anything that a court hasn’t required him to.
This came up in my 2024 favorites listen through (still re-educating Apple Music). This is probably the song I've listened to more than any other since this album came out? It's perfect: https://youtu.be/FnZDvYiTSJs?si=pSEK_6vmo71tSzcQ&t=53
Blogging on Monday morning got all nostalgic: https://lawver.net/2026/02/nostalgia-is-an-anchor/

I’ve gone out of my way to keep this super simple, even avoiding the need to open an editor and change any files. I hope you find it useful!
Liberate? Do my neighbors want to be liberated from Facebook and Nextdoor?
I don’t know what this is yet, but I want the quirky local BBS flavor in a fediverse world. Things like omg.lol and some mastodon servers have elements of it, but I want a real local place tied to it, like my local library or town, and I don’t know what that looks like or even how to explain what I want… I’ll get there, but there’s something. I just don’t have the words for it yet.
I want to uncapture my neighbors from the shitty corporate things they’re in and pull them into a beloved, abundant community of and by us, that is online and in person and for us, not for ads.

Dammit, me, stop checking your email, nothing good ever hits your inbox after 7PM.
Some days, I feel ancient. I was explaining OAuth yesterday and let slip that I was involved in getting AOL to implement OpenID, and then I had to explain both AOL and OpenID.
(I feel like I was a tangential accomplice in a lot of early web standards history - like, that time I helped kick off the rebellion that killed XHTML 2 at a cocktail party. Like, if someone made a movie about web standards from 2000 - 2010, a character actor you might recognize would play me and I'd be in the credits, but I'd have like one line and there's a good chance it would end up on the cutting room floor)

If I'm supposed to write a document, you're going to get lots of links to lots of other things while I'm thinking about that document. It's not procrastinating, it's my process.
Am on my work laptop, took a peek at my blog, found a typo, realized I could edit it directly on Github (moving it somewhere else soon, but the tutorial I followed to get it set up to autodeploy was there), did that and it autodeployed and updated within a couple of minutes.
Yep, still zero regrets moving away from wordpress!
Also, I realized this morning that Feedbin's "all" feeds export excludes categories, but NetNewWire's doesn't, so I can reorganize my feeds there, export them, and then use my little script to remove the categories I need it to remove (subscriptions and newsletters) and voila, way less work to keep the blogroll updated!
Yeah, so, I'm off LinkedIn. The whole MoltBook thing and LinkedIn lining up and unironically suggesting it to me was the last straw.
It's convinced me to really start working on my idea for a more human space to talk about work... because it's time.
My (angry) farewell post: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/kevinlawver_the-whole-moltbook-farce-the-engagement-activity-7423842805736710144--b0G?rcm=ACoAAAAbmOsBa2XENfy-WNEKISi0v0d2PFqsAyE
I finished another book! Ken Liu’s translation of Laozi’s Dao de Jing. I’m not sure I could tell you what Dao or De are after reading it, but I loved the experience of reading it. It was beautiful.
This morning's project was to add a blogroll. It's cobbled together from my feed reader and a little script that makes sure sites are still up. What I learned this morning is I need to redo my categories because things are all over the place! But, it's up, and that's good enough for now! https://lawver.net/blogroll/
