Welcome to the Dumb Dumb House
Inspired by Ethan Marcotte's meme collection a long time ago, I too created a directory and threw my memes in it. It was also just an Apache directory listing. And then, one day, my hosting provider decided that I couldn't have fun and disabled Apache directory listings. Was I deterred? NO!
I half-assedly built a site in Hugo to host all my memes, and there it sat, half done and unloved for many years until I got inspired by something we did at work where we did an experiment to see how quickly different AI models could build blogs with 11ty. For the Haiku run, I told it to create a "childish garish blog called 'Welcome to the Dumb Dumb House'." The design was so stupid, I fell in love.
So, this weekend, inspired by the spirit of The Dumb Dumb House, I recreated my meme repository as a living breathing Dumb Dumb House. It's so stupid, and not done, but I think it's so ridiculous, I will keep playing with it, and add more images and see just how silly I can make it.
Because that's what the web should be. It should be a field full of freak flags. Yours shouldn't be trapped in the algorithmic strangle of Facebook, Instagram or, god forbid, Twitter. It should be on your own site where you control what's displayed first and it can be as freaky as you want it to be.
