I logged into the HBO forums yesterday about 9am, there were 170 comments. When I went home last nite I refreshed the page and there were well over 3k.
Initially I was upset about the fade to black. I thought it was an easy way out. After giving it some thought, I think it was a great move. I like it for the ambiguity that was a primary feature of Tony’s life. What is good, what is bad, what is right what is wrong… He never seems to nail it down. Should Carm be a good mob wife or should she feel guilty. Should AJ “be a man” or something “less”. Should Meadow stay close or do her own thing (law or medicine). It seems like the whole show was about ambiguity and not knowing what was around the corner. But there was always, especially with Tony, and underlying desire to create a family that he never had as a child.
So, gathering the family in a simple diner for a family meal with Journey in the background singing “Don’t stop believing” and then cutting to an unknown future…. I like it.
I thought, why is the screen all black, and why can’t I hear anything. Then I thought, geez, what a bad ending. But then I figured maybe it was all artsy-fartsy, showing the futility of violence and the absolute lack of meaning in our lives as we become consumed with exagerated fictional exploits. In the end, I remembered that I don’t have HBO, so I was just watching nothing. Still, it wasn’t half bad.
