1. If you are not silly, it is vital you become silly

2. If you are silly, you must stay silly

2. If you used to be silly but have stopped, you must make all efforts to return to silliness

This post makes the think of the statue of Jesus the Homeless I first saw outside a church in Dublin, Ireland. There's a similar one in Austin, Texas. This sculpture today would be Jesus trying to get comfortable on a bench designed to be as hostile as possible.

Jesus the Homeless statue outside a church in Dublin, Ireland. It's a bench with a man laying down covered by a blanket. His feet stick out, and you can see the piercings from the nails of the cross on them.

Yppah is one of those bands I forget about for months at a time, and then fall in love with again, listen to for months on end and then somehow lather, rinse, repeat. This song has started the cycle again. SO GOOD: youtu.be/pR016ppnlyk?si=DdBSO2

If you've never served on a nonprofit, standards or government board, you totally should. You learn a LOT about governance, how to negotiate, compromise and REALLY how to run a meeting. I forget how handy those skills are at work until I end up having to run a meeting and, boom, there they are.

We got our pots from our first pottery class! Mine is on the left and my son’s is on the right. (It’s hard to tell, but they’re smol boys) I’m so pleased with them. They’re both our second attempts and we had so much fun, we’re going back next weekend for the intro to hand building class!

Two small ceramic pots. They have flat bottoms, mostly straight sides and clear glaze so they’re very light tan, the color of the fired clay.

Dr. Chuck Tingle putting difficult things into words as always 🔥

Facebook post from Chuck Tingle

whenever folks talk about harry potter and separating artist from art they always have this indignant 'OH SO IM A BAD FOR BUYING THESE BOOKS?' but thats not the question. the reality is that many will BELIEVE you are bad, and that is VALID. its not your choice what others think of you

'AM I BAD?' is a grand and cosmic question that is well beyond our scope. fine. here on the ground, the DAY TO DAY effects are that your actions contribute to hurt and suffering in small or large ways, and those who hurt and suffer because of you are allowed to not like you because of it. SORRY BUD.

what is alternative? forcing folks to enjoy the art of those who hurt them? THEY DONT LIKE IT.

someone saying 'your choices harm me so i dont like your creations and i dont like you' is not offensive, it is the most basic use of human autonomy and it is SO bizarre when folks argue otherwise if you are a bigot or support bigotry or act in a movie built on the profits of hate, people are allowed to not like you 1. because bigotry is bad and 2. because people generally DONT LIKE THINGS THAT HURT THEM. like this is so obvious. it is not 'canceling' it is an exercise in basic human autonomy

i swear if we had social media in the past people would call the hippie and punk movements 'cancel culture' too. LARGE GROUPS OF PEOPLE MOBILIZING AGAINST THE THINGS THAT HURT THEM IS NOT NEW. SORRY BUD IT IS NOT SOME GEN Z FAD IF YOU SUPPORT HATEFUL THINGS AND FOLKS DONT WANT TO BUY YOUR STUFF ANYMORE

60% of men can't find this church

An aerial photograph of an avenue in edinburgh. The street curves around an oval of woodland, and then meets again at a church in the distance. The whole image vaguely looks vaginal (and given the Victorians, maybe intentionally so) and the church is positioned roughly where the clitoris would be, if it existed.

Hello, I'm a woodcarver, and this is what I do ✌️

You can help me a lot by sharing my work, so people can buy or commission me sculptures.

Praying for octopus blessings on your life 🐙🙏

4 pictures of différents woodcarvings

Top left : Woodcarved humanoid octopus wearing a robe, arms wide open, in front of a book standing on branches. On the book, a frog. On the right arm, a kinfisher, and on the top of the head of the octopus, a round duck. The base is burn, on that angle it is not really obvious but is water with a slight wave form arround the octopus. On the background, an old door with old white paint.

Top right : Woodcarved creature (Siren Head) with very long skeletal arms and legs, also too many ribs. Its head is a pole with two speakers and wires. Those speakers have teeth. On the highest speaker, a nest with a pigeon. Siren Head is extending its left arm, point a finger forward. A pigeon sits on its index. Caption says "Based on Siren Head by Trevor Henderson"

Bottom left : Woodcarved humanoid goose wearing plate armour. She's holding a shield and a flanged mace. On the handle of the mace, a red robin landed. The eyes of the goose are made of glass. The feet and the beak are painted in burnt yellow, as the breast of the red robin. The upper part of the robin is painted in brown/grey and its eyes and beak in black.

Bottom right : Woodcarved humanoid crow wearing a hooded cloak, shoulder armor. It has its right hand on a sword. A squirrel is climbing its left arm. On the base, a cat is resting.

I’m finding it hard to keep the lid on the sadness bucket. In conversations, stuff just pops out when it shouldn’t and I catch myself starting to go off about some injustice and… I hate it.

It’s hard to be in the world right now. It’s hard to witness suffering and malice and the cruelty of the powerful, and feel powerless to do anything and not just think, “yeah, the ascetics were on to something.”

But then someone, on a work call no less, says it’s OK, and they have a sadness bucket too and some of the stuff in mine is in theirs and it’s not really either of ours to carry because we didn’t cause it. All we can do is be there, and that’s enough.

Sometimes all it takes is remembering that we aren’t witnessing the madness alone, that other people see it and get it and hate it, to make it a little easier to witness, and maybe the ascetics were selfish assholes for hiding away from it all (or they weren’t and I don’t know what I’m talking about which is very possible) and I should go live in the woods because sometimes people are better than alright.

Oh hey, it's the International Day of Awesomeness! This is year 18, and I can't believe it's still a thing (mostly thanks to it making it on to a bunch of those calendars of "hey, what happens on this day?" days). It started, like a lot of things, as a conversation in a meeting that turned into a conversation on twitter that turned into a website that turned into me dying my hair at SxSW Interactive 2008, and then me being interviewed about it for media around the world. Well, I hope it keeps going, and I hope you perform a feat of awesomeness today that makes you feel great. dayofawesomeness.com/

Story of loveliness for you all because you've been so well behaved recently.

I dated an Italian guy for about 3 months six years ago, and my mum decided it was time to start learning Italian.

The relationship didn't last but my mum never stopped learning Italian by herself in retirement. She's never had a teacher or been to a class; she's taught herself from apps and lots of books I've thrown at her.

She speaks Italian with the strongest English accent you've ever heard. There's no doubt to anyone that she is not a native speaker.

So last week she went to Turin for a couple of days, and she came back *buzzing*. She's been to Italy before and spoken Italian but this time was different.

She was having conversations in Italian with everyone about everything. Basic conversations but she was doing it and loving it.

In one restaurant the waiter couldn't possibly believe that she was an English person speaking this language. English?! English people only speak English! What the actual?! He was so overjoyed at her efforts that he kept bringing her all sorts of free food and limoncello until she asked him to stop.

When I spoke to her a couple of days ago she said it's so weird that you sit at home and learn this language but it doesn't mean anything. It's all nonsense. But then you go to a different country and say the nonsense words and people actually understand you!

I've always loved learning languages and this just warmed my cold, dead heart a wee bit.
