  • Seriously, It’s Movable!

I have some serious stuff I want to write about today or tomorrow, but I’m going to wait until I’m more awake before I do it. I got Movable Type installed on the Powerbook yesterday because I realized I’m never going to get anything done if I work on this stuff just at lunch. So, I spent an hour last night playing with the new template. The layout’s all done, and let me tell you, it’s butt-ugly without the stylesheet to go with it. But, the good news is it built and all the right information is showing up. Stuff is coming along… stay tuned.

In completely unrelated news, I found this goofy CD on a friend’s computer. The MP3’s have no track names, and I doubt this is really the name of the CD, but it shows promise. The first song is this weird techno mix of Rock Lobster by the B-52’s.

  • Today has flown by! I’m

Today has flown by! I’m building a reporting system between interuptions. It’s going to be really cool, and uber-maintainable so I can add people to contact lists, add and schedule reports and other neat-o stuff without having to restart anything. Sweet, huh? Yeah, I know, it’s keen.

In other news, apparently it’s Canada Day. So, to the 30 million Canucks up there protecting us from the North Pole’s advance, Happy Canada Day! Yes, think about it folks, the country that gave us William Shatner, Martin Short, Tom Green and The Kids in the Hall is populated by 30 million people. That’s fewer citizens than AOL has members. I swear there were more Canadians than that.

  • In an attempt to woo

In an attempt to woo me further, the lovely couple who give the world Movable Type released a new version yesterday with support for MySQL, which is kind of what I was waiting for. Now there’s no excuse other than time, and now that I’ve installed it once, I think I’d be OK installing it here. Look for neat-o stuff in the very near future (although I may wait until my vacation to do this).

  • So, I got Movable Type

So, I got Movable Type installed on the uber-box (running, of course, AOLserver). It was surprisingly easy. I didn’t have a lot of the required Perl modules installed, but that was also extremely easy to fix.

I may just have to go migrate myself. I don’t know about Jen and Max though. We’ll see, I guess. I am a little worried about migrating over almost 700 days worth of posts, and whether mozBlog will work with it.

In other extreme navel gazing, I’m here at work early for a 9am meeting I don’t want to go to. How wrong is this? I have a 9am meeting today and tomorrow. At my early morning meeting tomorrow, I have to give a big presentation, which I’m not done with. Wish me luck.

  • So, my site’s been moved.

So, my site’s been moved. I now have MySQL, PHP and all the other cool things that make things… ummm… yeah… cool. So, now that I have PHP and a database, should I do like everyone else and install Movable Type? I know there are other pieces of software out there that accomplish the same thing, should I use one of them? Should I stick with Blogger? Should I build my own? So many options!!

  • It takes forever to format

It takes forever to format a drive. Yes, I’m actually doing it. I am toasting my hard drive as I speak. My Windows desktop is getting a nice little refresh that will hopefully fix my phantom crashes and odd behaviors (I mean, other than the odd behavior built into Windows). Wish me luck. I hope I didn’t forget to backup anything important.

  • Since I talk about them

Since I talk about them all the time, I’ve decided to post a breakdown of the machines I have at work. Here you go, in no particular order:

    • Dell Precision 220 – 733mhz P3 / 20gb HD / 256 mb RAM – Win2k

    • Dell Precision 550 – Dual Xeon 1.7ghz / Dual 36gb SCSI hd / 1gb RAM – RedHat 7.2 (this is the uber-box)

    • Apple Powermac G4 – 867mhz G4 / 60gb hd / 512mb RAM – OS X

    • Apple Powerbook G4 – 550mhz G4 / 20gb hd / 256mb RAM – OS X

    • Sun Ultra 10 – 400mhz UltraSparc / 9gb hd / 512mb RAM – Solaris 7 (which I sorely need to upgrade)

Why do I need so many machines? I live in a strange inbetween world. I work on frontends for a ton of different products that have to work in pretty much every browser, which explains the Macs and Windows machines. I also write a lot of code for log-crunching and other weird on-going maintenance type things, which explains the uber-box and the Sun box. So, see, it all makes sense when you get down to it. That, and I love collecting hardware, especially hardware that work will pay for.

  • I feel so geekily accomplished.

I feel so geekily accomplished. I’m installing GNOME2 on the uber-box and have already completed the schema for a new project (reporting – not exciting). What else will I be able to accomplish today? Who knows!!?? It’s not even 11! Maybe I’ll rewrite everything in Java (which I need to learn). Maybe I’ll invent a better velco. Maybe I’ll make sense of the mysteries of the universe and plot a course to the stars. Maybe I’ll get some more caffeine…

  • I’m fighting the inevitable. My

I’m fighting the inevitable. My PC has been running the same installation of Windows 2000 for over a year now. I have a RedHat partition I never use now that I have my wonderBox running Linux. My machine’s starting to drag. It’s losing its pep. There are programs hanging around that refuse to uninstall. Weird things are happening. It’s time to sign the DNR (Delete n’ Reinstall). It’s time to repartition with one big partition, because I have lots of other hard drive to back things up on. It’s time to start fresh.

    Maybe next week…

  • There’s nothing like coming in

There’s nothing like coming in to work and running from the start. It’s 11am now, and I’ve been working on fire after fire since 8:45. It’s satisfying but exhausting. It’s time for a nap, I think. Has anyone else noticed that I post a lot more now that I’m using mozBlog?
