Speaking of starving… I’ve been doing pretty well with my New Year’s Resolution. I decided that I drink way too much soda (I was up to 3-4 20oz Dr. Peppers or Code Reds a day). So, I’m down to one 20oz Dr. Pepper for breakfast. On my daily trek to the convenience store in the building with some friends, I decided to take a look at how many calories I’m saving with my new plan. If you look at the back of your Dr. Pepper bottle, it says there are 100 calories per serving. You’d think by serving, they meant the bottle, right? Nope! 8 ounces. Who drinks 8 ounces of a 20 ounce bottle and then puts it away? Not I, and not anyone I know. There are 2.5 servings per bottle, which means that every 20 ounce Dr. Pepper is actually 250 calories. That means I’m saving 750 calories a day by not drinking my other three. And even worse, Code Red is 120 (I think, it might be 150) calories per serving. Fat, your days are numbered!

How long will be before
How long will be before we can give up on supporting Netscape 4.7? Mac IE 4.5? I work for a very large corporation, with amazingly stubborn users who refuse to upgrade, or change their resolution. So, we’re stuck in the stone age supporting ancient browsers with bloated pages and spacer gifs. You’d think they could drive the upgrade cycle with new clients.
I think there should be a cutoff date. The web builders (cuz I’m no designer) of the world should band together and say, “As of INSERTDATEHERE, we will no longer support obsolete browsers. If you have not upgraded by SAIDDATE, your web experience will suck.” There have already been small strides with the Web Browser Upgrade program, but it hasn’t been embraced by large corporations. Why? Money, mostly. Also, it’s partly ignorance. The suits don’t care what people use as long as they see the ads and buy stuff. Little do they realize, that by supporting these ancient browsers, they’re hindering their ability to make money. With new technology comes new opportunities. There will come a day when we can no longer retrofit the new stuff for the old hole. As resilient as Netscape 4.76 has been, it’s time to give it up.
So, my fellow members of the web proletariat, let’s band together and then go get something to eat. I’m starving. Ranting makes me hungry.

Other than a few links
Other than a few links in posts that I didn’t correctly quote, at least this page is HTML 4.01 transitional validated. My style sheet is 100% CSS validated. I feel so anal.

Now, the Bucs have fired
Now, the Bucs have fired Tony Dungy. With Dennis Green, and now Tony Dungy on the market, the ‘skins went and signed Mr. Spurrier? Now, I admit that he’s a good coach with an offensive system that can put up a lot of points. The problem is the guy has no NFL track record. There’s no way of knowing how his style will translate. Green and Dungy both have proven track records.
I feel really bad for both guys. Dennis Green had to deal with a tragedy in training camp that you could tell sapped his team. They just weren’t the same. He had to deal with the unexpected loss of Robert Smith to retirement. After what he did for that franchise, you’d think the owner would realize that and let him try to redeem himself next season. Dungy only took the laughingstock of the NFL and turned them into a contender. The guy is all class. I’m hoping both guys resurface soon. I would love to see Green take over in Indy. To see him get ahold of the triumverate of Manning, James and Harrison would be a glory to behold. Dungy would be a good fit in San Diego where there defense has lost a little swagger. With Dungy in charge of head coaching and defense and Norv Turner heading the offense, I think they could be back in the playoffs in no time.

The Redskins have a new
The Redskins have a new coach. I’m a little surprised it all happened this quickly, but I guess I shouldn’t be. The short owner isn’t known for acting with deliberation. Now they have a coach who will at least make them entertaining. I’ll be interested to see who they get as GM. That’s the real problem. Tony Banks won’t work as the QB in Spurrier’s system, and well, I doubt anyone else on the roster right now will either. That means they need a GM who can get a top-flight QB without mortgaging too much of the future. Good luck.

Book Musings
I’m still thinking about the book I want to write. There are only a few things I know enough about to fill a book: AOLserver, Tcl, SQL, HTML and CSS being up on the list. I think a book about all of those things without a hook could be a huge jumbled mess and take way too long to complete. So, I’m leaning towards a “You Can Build an Intranet in a Month” book about using a PC with RedHat, AOLserver and Postgres on it to create a useful and powerful intranet (much like the one I created for work only more formalized).
The problem I’m having with this concept is that there’s already a great community system out there for AOLserver. The problem is there are no books about it. You couldn’t go to Amazon and find an O’Reilly book on the ACS or AOLserver. Someone needs to write one, and while I’m not the expert on AOLserver, I’m good. I’ve been using it for years and have enough passion for it to fill a book of just praise for it. But, who wants to read that?
I’m still intrigued by the Group Project Manual of Style idea too. I may tackle that one first because it could be article-length and will be less server-specific.
Either way, I should shut up and start writing it.

TiVo Weekend Movie Review: Thanks
TiVo Weekend Movie Review:
Thanks to TiVo, I watched a couple weird movies this weekend. The first, Jesus’ Son stars Billy Crudup as a Heroin junkie and all-around useless fellow who finds his calling in a “home”. It’s odd, and I should have paid more attention. The movie’s uneven, and probably not really worth watching other than Billy Crudup’s performance, and the scenes with Dennis Hopper and Denis Leary.
I also watched most of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. I saw it when it first came out on video, but I don’t remember it being quite so disturbing. It’s a movie I’ll have to watch in half-hour episodes. But, if you loved the show, you’ll want to see the movie. It’s just plain twisted though, so don’t watch it late at night or without all the lights on (yes, I’m a big chicken).

So, Jen says I may
So, Jen says I may write a book. If I can remains to be seen. She’ll watch Max and give me time to go hide in my office and write. I guess I’m really going to do this. Now, I have to get started. How does one start a book? Do I do an outline? Do I just start writing? I guess we’ll have to see.
