Ooooh, oooh, oooh!! Trey Atanasio
Ooooh, oooh, oooh!! Trey Atanasio (from Phish), Les Claypool (Primus) and Stuart Copeland (The Police, duh) have formed a band!! They have a couple videos you can watch online, and wow. Take the funky slap bass from Primus, Les’s goofy vocals, Trey’s intricate guitar work, and Copeland’s crazy drums and I’m in geeeee-tar music happy heaven land. The bass-i-ness of it all reminds me of early Living Colour – nice and thick without being annoying. Fine stuff… expect a full review after I get the album. (link via Caterina)
Jen’s dad made it here
Jen’s dad made it here safely. Max put on quite a show for his Grandpa, making a mess at dinner, running around the house naked after his bath and saying “Bye!” to everyone and everything. What a cutie.
He’s asleep and Jen and her dad are upstairs watching JAG, which I can’t bear to watch. It’s just so… CBS. There’s something wrong with most shows on that network. They’re too sappy, goofy and simple for me. Especially JAG. What a piece of crap.
Take Two
I’m going to try this post again because I’m up watching this game and don’t feel like going to bed yet. It’s time, once again, for the Lawver.net Weekend TV Review:
- Once and Again: I admit it, I’m a girl. I love this show, probably even more than my wife. We both agree that the best shows are the ones that revolve around the kids, and this was a great one. I’ve never seen a better ensemble of young actors before, and may never again. The kids in this show convey deep emotions with such reality that I’m at a loss to even describe it. If you don’t watch this show, you should.
- The Cell: I watched this alone Saturday morning while everyone was napping. This movie isn’t on the level of Seven or Silence of the Lambs. Not even the level below it. But, it does have some redeeming qualities. The imagery in the dream world is great, alternatingly gorgeous and disturbing. The problems lie in the acting. Vincent D’Onofrio is otherworldly as usual, and pulls off his part well. Jennifer Lopez though… she should stick to acting. She was horrible: wooden and lifeless when she should have been the most appealing and human character in the movie.
- Iron Chef – Lamb Battle: The title says it all. Only this show would have the guts to call a cooking competition a “battle”. This show is camp at its finest. The draw isn’t in the cooking, which is always a nice side-effect, but not the main draw. The best parts: the bad translations, which include eating sounds like slurping, talking with food in the mouth and heavy swallowing, the hilarious outfits of the “chairman” of kitchen stadium, and the mock solemnity of the whole affair. Way too much fun.
Yes, I’m still waiting on
Yes, I’m still waiting on people to give me data that I can then manipulate and build things with. I’m waiting on things to be installed so I can use them. I’m waiting on people to figure out that they have a job to do and then do it. In the meantime, I’m using my mad webSkills © to build fabulous philanthropic things that will benefit mankind. Can I tell you what they are? Well, I’d rather not because I’m trying to be humble about the whole thing. But, it’s SO hard when it’s this cool. You know? I want to show everyone what I did (am doing – it’s not QUITE finished yet) and say, “See, ain’t this neat?” But, I’ll be good and save it.
On a completely different note, I hate the networks. Their handling of their “entertainment” has been pretty sad so far. Case in point: NBC’s Third Watch ran a two hour docu-weepy about firefighters. Now, if it was called “Dateline” or “an NBC News Special”, that would be fine. But, they’re using the country’s pain, and these firefighters experiences as an advertisement for their crappy show. To make matters worse, the shows premiere next week actually has the balls to cover the days of 9/10 and 9/11 from their fictional characters points of view. I can’t believe it. I’m in shock that NBC could think that this is a good idea. West Wing’s tolerance info-mercial was bad enough. Now, they have to go and do this? I may never watch NBC again.
Which bring up another TV point: Why don’t I care about the new season? There are three shows I watch with any enthusiasm now: The West Wing, Once and Again and That 70’s Show. Everything else could get cancelled and I wouldn’t care. I couldn’t sit through last week’s Survivor. I hate ER now. Maybe it’s because I crave news. Maybe I just don’t feel the need to be “entertained” by fiction as much now. I’d much rather watch a concert or a sporting event. I think it’s that nothing the networks could come up with could be as moving or traumatic as what’s been happening. In their attempts to recover they’re only making it worse.
If you’ve never heard it,
If you’ve never heard it, Living Colour‘s version of These Memories Can’t Wait is just the greatest song to hum along with while eating your morning bagel.
I’ve also been listening to a lot of Bela Fleck recently, and I just have to say how great Tales From the Acoustic Planet is. It has it all, and just gets better the more I listen to it.
In no particular order, for
In no particular order, for your Monday Morning, post-fantasy football loss, enjoyment:
Kevin’s Top 4 Foreign Films in No Particular Order
- Toto Le Hero: By Jaco van Dormael (he has two in the top four, how cool is he?), this is the story of two men switched at birth and the places their lives intersect. An amazing story with some very funny twists thrown in.
- The Eigth Day: Also by van Dormael, this is the story of George, a man with Down Syndrome. It’s sweet, romantic, funny and heartbreaking. A must-see. If you live in Sterling, I might even loan it to you.
- Kolya: This movie made me cry and cry, like a little baby. Maybe I’ll tell you why later. At the beginning of the film, you’ll find no reason to like the main character. By the end, you’ll wonder why you felt that way. Heartbreaking and sweet, but not in a Hallmark way.
- The Nasty Girl: The lies we tell ourselves about the past. A young woman investigates her small German town and their part in World War 2. A great movie.
- Five would be here, but i’m drawing a blank… sorry, i’m not caffeinated yet.
Back to Music: I brought
Back to Music: I brought in a bunch of old CDs today, and am now listening to my Living Colour collection (no, dammit, it’s not the TV show). What amazing stuff. Between Corey Glover’s stellar voice and Vernon Reid’s guitar, they produced two of the best albums of the late 80’s/early 90’s. Vivid and Time’s Up were just great. Other than Nothingness, Stain was a waste. But, then, Vernon and Corey came out with solo albums that redeemed them. All worth checking out. Oh laws yes (I read The Stand the weekend I bought Time’s Up so that phrase is connected to the album for me).
And the first Tales from
And the first Tales from the Acoustic Planet.
On a happy note
On a happy note, I introduced someone at work to Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. Yes! And, for those of you who haven’t been introduced, you, meet the guys in the band. Guys in the band, meet you. There, now go buy Live Art and Flight of the Cosmic Hippo and have a good music heaven time.
