  • Road Trippin’

We made it through day one! We made it through the first leg of the trip just fine. Brian had a couple “I’m two” moments, but really, they weren’t bad at all. We stopped just three times, two potty breaks and a break for lunch outside Roanoke.\
    The stats for today:

    • 590 miles
    • 10.2 hours
    • 2 10 minute potty breaks
    • 1 40 minute lunch break
    • Even with the breaks, we “averaged” 57 miles per hour. Take the breaks out and we averaged 64 miles per hour. Not bad considering a couple bad wrecks that caused some delays, and hitting “rush hour” in Chattanooga. The traffic was manageable all the way down, and the boys were little angels.\
We even mostly missed the rain. We raced it the whole way and got caught a couple times by some light showers, but never anything horrible – just enough to clean off the windshield.\
We’ve eaten dinner, the boys are in their jammies watching cartoons, and I’m recharging the laptop (the cigarette lighter power adapter can’t quite put out enough juice for the macbook pro, I guess), and checking mail (and writing this).\
Tomorrow – 381 miles to go… then I’ve been promised the best barbecue on the planet, served by fat women in a restaurant without a floor. I’ll let you know how it goes (cuz it sounds like my kind of place).
  • Quandry

I have a ton of stuff of substance to blog about (church, meetings at Max’s school, dumb ass politicians) but instead I want to tell you all about my latest dilemma. Today I went shopping for the road-trip-required twizzlers and peanut M&Ms for the drive to my parents’ house next week. Then I remembered that Brian can’t eat nuts and if he sees me not sharing, he’ll pitch a fit. Waaaah. I need my peanut M&Ms for the trip. It just won’t be the same without them! What am I to do?

  • Look out, world!

I have been dealing with the longest bout of PMS ever. At what point do I face reality and admit it’s not PMS, it’s just that I am a cranky bitch?\
Yesterday was a bad day at Chez Lawver, with the broken pipe, flooded basement, heater on the fritz, and the lack of running water. I had Kevin take us out to dinner (my hero) just to keep the boys happy and out of my hair until bedtime. The waitress asked if we wanted an appetizer. I said, “No, but I want a brownie sundae with 4 spoons to eat now, while the real food is cooking. Because that is the kind of day I had.” Her eyes widened a little, in fear I think, while Kevin just laughed. But it was fun! My mom applauded when she heard about it. The best part was that Kevin filled up on sundae and salad and took home almost a whole steak and baked potato, which I ate for lunch. Score one for me!

  • In and Out, and out, and out

The good news: Except for one gift I still need to buy Max (I had to take something back, so I am a bit behind), I am DONE with my Christmas shopping! Yippeeeeee!\
The bad news: The heater has been on the fritz, so that it gets ridiculously cold in the house. It has been deciding to work about once a day. I have someone coming to look at it today, to the tune of I-don’t-know-how-much. Of course now that I made an appt, this morning the heater has been working. I am afraid that the guy will come out and say it is fine, but then it will stop working again tomorrow. Grrr. At least if my heater really is working, I will only have to pay a smaller amount than having it fixed or replaced. Bright side, right?\
A pipe broke this morning, I think from the cold, so now part of my basement is flooded and that is an extra few hundred dollars out the window. Plus, last week I needed to have my garbage disposal replaced. Homeownership is sucking the big fat one, right now.\
Oh, and a couple of months ago we had our ice maker fixed. Only now sometimes things get stuck up in there, so the ice won’t come out of the shoot. Pooey to that. And sometimes a layer of ice forms over the food on the shelf below the ice maker, like there is a small leak or the ice tray over sprays when filling. Grrrr.

  • Thank Goodness…

Costco sells Midol in bulk. Best money I ever spent. Huh, Kev?

  • Wishful Thanking

Thanksgiving was great. Max and I went over to my parents’ early to help out. I spent the morning stuffing a turkey, chopping veggies and eating (you have to pre-eat on Turkey Day or you get full too early). We watched Over the Hedge and Cars with the kids, played games, and had a good time. We even talked about politics without yelling. I call that a success.\
Thanks to my boss, I’ve got Monday-Wednesday off, other than going in to give a presentation on microformats on Tuesday. Jen has a list of manly-putting-things-together things I have to do, which will be fun as long as I get over this cold.\
And since it’s that time of year again, and just in case you’re in the gift-giving mood, here’s my wishlist. Not that I’m expecting anything, honestly.\
Time to go put Brian down for a nap…

  • Ode to a love… seat

I am in the process of “redecorating” my living room. I use quotes because I am not really making that many changes. I found new curtains that will let me keep my existing sofa sectional, and I think we won’t need to entirely repaint, just touch up over Brian’s crayon scrawls. Basically that means I replaced the curtains, a desk, occasional tables, art, lamps, am adding a storage cabinet, and am swapping a loveseat for a side chair.\
When we bought our townhouse, Kevin and I decided to make our living room and dining area nice and adult (no Target art like we had in college), without being too formal: beautiful taupe suede paint on the walls, cherry wood occasional tables, to-die-for drapes, colorful glass vases, an extra large dining table for guests. After 5 years of living with this though, I have accepted my laziness (I never used a cover for the table and the water spots were destroying the finish), lack of a social life (most of the chairs went unused and were cumbersome for the size of the area), the desire for the computer to be moved from the basement office to a more central location, and the need for more storage. (TMI alert- Kevin thinks I have a storage fetish. But you try living in a townhouse without a garage, two kids with more clothes than their parents, and a husband’s comic book collection.)\
So, I gave up on “adult” and embraced the IKEA look. While my mom is probably cringing at the thought of the computer in the living room (and not even hiding in a cabinet!), I love the new look and feel. So much more relaxed, casual, and bright. But, it means I have to say goodbye to my beloved love seat. The love seat was given to me by some family friends and my MIL and I recovered it in gorgeous gold fabric. It’s so lovely, I hate to see it go. But I don’t have anywhere to put it. (It is up for grabs, if you can haul it away yourself. First one to claim it, can have it.) BTW, when the living room is finished, I will probably post pics! But this post is to say goodbye to my beautiful love seat. Sniff. According to my MIL, the fabric is silk with cotton over-embroidery. Oy, I may need a tissue. My MIL even hand-stitched the pleats down in the front AND back because I am kind of ‘detail-focused,’ sometimes. Later we realized couches that you buy in stores don’t even have that detail! Hmm, she may need a tissue too.\
    Isn’t it lovely?\
    Isn't it lovely?\
ETA- she just emailed me, “I still wish I had a home for it. It is like giving away our first child. OK, not quite that serious.” But still painful!

  • Oh, Happy Day

    • John McCain is running! Yippeee! That should make Kevin a very happy man, unless he has become too jaded.
    • Supernatural is on tonight! (Thursdays on The CW at 9 EST)
    • After one whole day, the kitchen floor is still clean.
    • It’s Thursday, which means it is almost Friday, which means it is almost the weekend.
    • Sneak peek of the next Veronica Mars.
    • My king-sized blanket is still cuddly and soft.
    • All the preschoolers in Alabama survived the devastation of their building being destroyed by a storm.
    • Max got his report card yesterday and is doing very well in school.\
What are you happy about today?
  • Three cheers for Kevin

I have the best husband ever. I would love to tell you all of the reasons why he is so wonderful, but then you might get jealous and want him for yourself. But you can’t have him. So then it would just seem like I am gloating. And gloating is rude. So, I will keep all of the reasons to myself. Just know that he is awesome and I am very appreciative of him.\
In completely unrelated news, (heh), Kevin and I have this weird dynamic where one of us will want something- a bigass diamond ring, a really expensive car, to repaint the living room, etc- and after talking about it for awhile & the other person finally agrees, the person who originally wanted the thing changes his or her mind, realizing that spending the money isn’t the best decision.

  • Small pleasures

The past few days have been filled with many small pleasures:

    • Free lunch! I love Baja Fresh taquitos!
    • Kevin and I finally put up the new curtains I bought 3 months ago!
    • Taking the time to toast the bread for my turkey sandwich, because I am worth it!
    • My new king-sized blanket. So soft and cuddly!
    • Tivoed football games!
    • Getting rid of clutter!\
What is the best thing you experienced this past week or so?
