Penn&Teller broke Kevin’s heart a little bit last night when they said he couldn’t join their club. Awwww. š Their latest show was on The Boy Scouts of America and how they discriminate against homosexuals and atheists, yet still receive government money, ever since the Mormon church got involved. Shame on the BSA! Pick a side and stick with it! Either you are a public group that allows anyone to be a member (and receives government money) or you are a private group that can make membership selective (and does not receive government money).\
Speaking of homosexuals, I was lurking at TWoP and saw a funny post. A woman saw a commercial for Big Love, an HBO show about polygamy set in Utah, where one of the wives got into a screaming match about praying for souls with two guys on bikes. The poster thought the two guys were gay. Hee. Someone else from TWoP explained that they weren’t gay, just missionaries.

Hump Day!
Today is the day that comes closest to a day off for me: Babba Day! After school, Max will go hang out with his grandma leaving Brian and me to do whatever we want. YAY! I even get to take a nap without any guilt! Wahoo! (In reality, I usually end up accidentally crashing on the couch every afternoon when Max and I watch Myth Busters.)\
Kevin has the one working car today, so Brian and I are going to hang out in comfy pants ALL DAY! I am not even going to put a bra on! But I have laundry to do and a kitchen to clean. Plus Brian has a cold and is extra cranky, so today won’t be total fun. But like I said, it is the closest I get to a day off, so YAY! And then tonight we are ordering Chinese food and will settle on the couch for an all new and exciting Veronica Mars (on UPN at 9pm EST)! So, double YAY!\
I must have been extra excited to start my day off because I woke up four times between 5 am and 6 am, when my alarm was set to go off. Isn’t that weird?
Brilliant!
Hey, would ya look at that: all of my posts on this page are sans any mention of Veronica Mars! I’ll have to rectify that.\
The latest episode was The Rapes of Graff and Kristen Bell was phenomenal. I can’t believe you guys aren’t watching this show. There were two scenes in particular that blew me away: when she was talking to the rape victim (it helps to know some of Veronica’s own back story) and when she was talking to a woman who worked in a wig shop. The end of that scene was priceless!
Eh, whatever.
It’s interesting to read the various reactions about Big Love, especially from LDS members. Some believe that polygamy will be re-instituted on earth at some point and others don’t, some think there will be polygamy in the next life and others don’t. Honestly, there is much I don’t know about how things will shake out. Someone posted this philosophy, “The Mormon perspective, at least, tends to be, ‘Eh, we’ll work out the details in the next life.’ ;)” at TWoP. I laughed when I read that but that is kinda how I feel. Except that I am absolutely positive that whatever happens will be my choice; I won’t be forced into anything. So, either way, the thought doesn’t bother me at all.
Arrested Development Love
Michael Cera and Alia Shawkat, who played George Michael and Maeby Fünke on Arrested Development, are going to be in TONIGHT’s episode of Veronica Mars. Woohoo! That’s Veronica Mars, Wednesday UPN at 9pm EST.\
Kevin and I gave season 1 of AD to his dad as a gift. I am not sure he got it, but it is a wicked funny show!\
ETA- Apparently, some jerk-off decided to play an April’s Fools Joke early and sent out a fake press release that VM was cancelled. THIS IS NOT TRUE, it has not been cancelled. The guy should have just prank-called the zoo like every other self-respecting April’s Foolser.
TV Time
So who watched Veronica Mars last night? Who? Who?
Veronica Mars is back, baby!
Veronica Mars is all new on Wednesday, on UPN at 9pm EST. Super YAY! The best part? No more breaks from here until the finale! For those who can’t even wait until Wed, UPN.com shows the opening scene each week. Squeeeeeeeeee!\
If you haven’t watched out the show before, it isn’t too late to hop on the hip train. The mystery is being ramped up (and will be solved by the end of the season!) and next year’s mystery is going to be subtly introduced (says creator Rob Thomas). Come on, all the cool kids are watching. So, CHECK IT OUT! And then tell me what you thought of it! Thanks!\
Ooooh, also, UPN is re-airing the episode either on Saturday or Sunday (check your local affiliate) and again on Tuesday. There just really isn’t any excuse not to watch!\
P.S. Kev, could you post something extra computery and geeky to get my half of the blog’s readership up? Thanks, babe. Kisses!
Not so scandalous really
Big Love was really sad I thought. More than I was expecting, even though I knew it was about a dysfunctional family (cuz it is on HBO afterall). Like how Barb couldn’t even go comfort her husband of 17 years, for fear of stirring up jealousy. Eh, that’s rough.\
My biggest question is how/why do they refer to themselves as “sealed for eternity” when they aren’t going to any church? (They aren’t just inactive, they actively left their old church.) That is a religious ceremony that requires actually participating in church throughout this life to recieve its benefits in the next life. Oh, and Marj was wearing a sleeveless shirt? I don’t think so! Ha. I am so going to end up being one of those annoying military or doctor guys who can’t watch a show about the military or medicine because they keep nitpicking about the errors.\
I feel much empathy for Marj’s character. Taking care of babies is hard. But Barb and Nicky have much older children and it is really unfair to Marj that she compares herself to them at this time (but totally natural at the same time). They were probably both overwhelmed and tired when their kids were that little too. But since Marj is in the middle of the muck, she can’t think straight. In a few years, she’ll realize it and feel better about herself. Maybe just in time to help the 4th wife, heh.\
I am looking forward to having more of the backstory filled in, like why did Bill and Nicky get married if Barb and Nicky didn’t get along? I wonder how they bought all three houses- did they just overpay for the neighboring houses to entice the owners to sell?\
It irritates me that Bill is driving a new and expensive SUV all while complaining about money issues. Get a cheap, old Ford, dumbhead!\
I can’t comment on the impotence issue, because I have no personal experience with that. Nor have I personally dealt with the extreme off-shoots of the church. But I still maintain that any type of marriage between consenting adults should be legal (except for relatives, because of the likelihood of genetic problems with their offspring,). It is the welfare fraud, sexual, and physical abuse that should be eradicated, not the constitutionally guaranteed freedoms.\
So, what did you guys think?
HA!
“People feel that way when it is damp.”
Close, But Not Quite
(I wrote this in the Frankfurt airport yesterday… just now getting around to posting it)\
You know, you’d think I’d remember how weird watching familiar TV shows in different languages is. But, I’m an idiot, so of course, it’s a shock every time. I didn’t want much TV this week, but when getting ready in the morning, or more often, when in the transition from “nerding out” to “good gravy, I’m exhausted and ready for sleeping, brain shut off now” and needing something to distract me from vertical text, mixed left to right and right to left text interspersed with vertical text and all the problems that poses for CSS (and the world in general – is it too late for Esperanto? And no, Richard, I’ll never join the Internationalization Working Group… one day was enough).\
Where was I, oh yeah, TV. In the hotel, they had a collection of stations:
- a bunch of French channels
- a station from Monaco in Italian
- Eurosport – where all the commentary is English, but the ticker and commercials are German
- BBC One – If you don’t know what the BBC is, umm, you need to get out more.
- CNN International
- Rei Uno – Italian
- RTL – German
- and Russian, Chinese and Arabic stations.\
For some reason, I was drawn to Rei Uno because they had the Italian version of Big Brother, you know, Grande Fratello (it might have been Fratello Grande, I can’t remember – I’ve been up for a long time). It was funny as hell, really. I didn’t need to understand anything they said, the situation was easy to figure out. We’ve seen the situations all before, and there seems to be something about Italian TV that even if you turned off the sound, you could tell exactly what was going on.\
And, the kings of reality TV, the British, have put together another absolute winner: Millionaire Mansion. You know those shows where people bring in old crap and some tweed-clad aristocrat tells them that it’s really a Victorian bowel de-obstructor and is worth, wait for it, eight thousand pounds!!! Hooray for worthless old crap that turns out to be treasure! The BBC has taken that rather stuffy premise (I watched it getting ready one morning, and wow, it is), and turned it into a reality game show!! I couldn’t turn it off… People off the street, in family teams, have to pick the most valuable item out of three, and then answer some really ridiculous pop culture questions in order to win a vacation in Barbados. Yeah, it’s just as good as it sounds.\
It’s good to be heading home. As I’m writing this, I’m sitting in the business lounge in Frankfurt, catching up on TV from last week that I didn’t have time to watch (because I was pulled in by virile Italians trapped in a house crying and then confessing, and then making out).\
More to come…
