This is huge. It’s going to change the future of the web for the better, and that’s a damn good thing. I have a lot more to say about this, but I’m still at work and it’s Friday night.
I have so much vacation time that I haven’t used (I’ve taken a grand total of four days of vacation time all year), that I have to take off a huge chunk at the end of the year. How much time? My last day of work for 2006 is December eighth.\
I’m sure Jen will find stuff for me to do, but I’m looking at the calendar at those vast tracts of time and thinking that I might just have time to finish my “class project” (my “hey, let’s learn Ruby on Rails project) and launch it.
Kevin finally watched Veronica Mars last night so I can post all of my favorite lines and points, but eh, it’s so three days ago and I just don’t have the energy. Kevin laughed so loud at some parts, I am sure the kids way upstairs could hear him.\
I still loved all of Dick’s scenes. It’s interesting to see how the actor who plays Dick started out as a glorified extra, with a breakout performance of “Logan!” (HA!) that gradually got him a starring role. In S1, Logan was the jerk who reminded Veronica how far she’d fallen. Then the writers made Logan so wonderfully complex & layered, the actor was so charismatic, and he & Kristen Bell have so much crackling chemistry together that the character moved from ‘one-dimensional jerk’ to leading-woobie-man-status. So the writers made Jerk 2.0 in the form of Dick. Much to the happiness of that actor, I am sure. He gets all of the great, amusing, memorable, and politically insensitive lines that Logan used to get.\
Someone at TWoP posted this as one of their favorite lines: She came in with a guy. She’s falling asleep on my magazine rack and he’s trying to scrape together enough change to buy provolactics.\

Me: I am not sure what a provolactic is. Is that the type of birth control they use in Utah?\
Friend 1: It’s not birth control, it’s the name for Utah mothers who breastfeed.\
Me: Hahahaha.\
Friend 2: Huh. I thought it was cheese for the lactose intolerant.\

I was in an interview today (update: not for a job for me, I was interviewing them to do a job for AOL), talking to a design and development shop (who will remain nameless) about their work and other assorted web-nerdery (flash vs. html, accessibility, localization, etc) when I asked them about the different DOCTYPES they use and why they didn’t just pick one and stick with it. Here’s how the conversation went.
He didn’t get it right away, which is probably a good thing. I wish every interview went that well.

This ep had the look and feel of season one. Very dark, literally, which is awesome. And Veronica was back to pissing people off, alienating herself as she investigates. Super yay to that. The show needs to keep up this angle. But, um… she has a picture of the rapist? So, the mystery is solved now? I seriously doubt that, but this picture bit confuses me.\
On a totally shallow note- I dislike that the actress who plays Parker got to keep her hair while the other rape victims are showed without hair. They could have at least put Parker in some fake-looking wigs.\
In Gilmore Girls news- They are rerunning quirky town storylines! The great pickle smell of ’06 is the same as the rotten eggs of… whenever that was. Boo to that. This ep proved that they can get rid of Luke. And the stupid Aerie girls need to go. And yay for Logan in the flesh.
I gave a presentation on microformats this morning at “AJAX Experience”http://theajaxexperience.com. Thanks to Molly and Aaron, I didn’t run way under, and I think it went pretty well. The AIM Pages demos went pretty well, but the network hiccuped just when I was trying to publish my page. Oh well.\

Hey, remember when I complained in a previous post about Logan H. on Gilmore Girls not having any interesting scenes since he is only shown on the phone? Well, guess what? Complaining works! The actor who plays Logan H. will guest star on Veronica Mars tonight. Wheeeee. The TV Guide and other tv-focused peeps made a big deal a few years ago when the Gilmore Girls introduced Logan H. and Logan from Veronica Mars made a big splash at the same time. There were lots of comparisons and articles about them. I guess TPTB took note, because they finally got the Logans working together. Kinda cool, imo.\
Laura San Giacome, from Just Shoot Me, will also be on tonight’s Veronica Mars. And HEY! Enrico Colantoni (Keith) also starred on Just Shoot Me. They played friends-turned-lovers. It’ll be neat to see them working together again. I love Enrico.\
In other TV news, Kevin loved the premiere of Torchwood. I haven’t had a chance to watch it yet.\
I am currently watching last night’s MNF game. I tivoed it because I knew I wouldn’t be able to stay up late enough. (YAY for tivo.) Even though I accidentally spoiled myself of the outcome this morning, the game is still pretty interesting.
I am obviously the worst mother ever, since I can’t figure out to play Katamari for my 2 year old. The screen says click “X” for ok, and nothing happens when I do. I click “start” and “select” and nothing freakin’ happens!! Grrr. Oh, except Brian starts crying like I am stabbing a puppy over and over again. He keeps handing me the controller, “Here you go,” very hopefully. But I don’t know how to get it to work! GAH! I give up. Seriously. The smartest decision I ever made was to never play video games with Max. I am re-enacting this policy for Brian. And he can’t make me feel guilty! No, he can’t! I won’t cave. Even if he is the cutest, snotty-nosed, teary-eyed toddler ever.
Instead of paying for the hotel’s network connection, I decided to give my brand new EVDO card a shot. I was talking to one of AOL’s VP’s about my presentation and trying to find the time to write demos and she asked what I would do if I had a budget. Of course, I told her I’d get an EVDO card so I wasn’t held hostage to crappy hotel networks. Well, here we are, and I’ve got one, and it works!\
I checked my mail at the airport, worked on my presentation and fixed a couple bugs in the demos last night in the hotel, am uploading pictures to Flickr and it’s going OK. It’s not as fast as a wired connection, or even a solid wi-fi connection, but it’s fast enough to get things done. E-mail’s no problem, and even uploading photos is going smoothly. Connecting using Verizon’s expresscard modem is pretty seamless as long as you remember that it’s more modem than wi-fi card (and remember to disconnect before you put your machine to sleep.\
If you can get work to pay for it, I’d do it. If you work for yourself and are on the road all the time, I’d do it. It made the flight delay bearable because I could get work done while sitting in the terminal, and it gave me an option when the hotel network was unacceptable. I would bet that I’ll probably use it to give a presentation here at some point (hopefully not today, my demos are kind of bandwidth intensive).\
I woke up at 4AM, probably because I didn’t eat dinner last night and I’m hungry. Unfortunately, the restaurant doesn’t open till 6. So, I took some pictures in the bathroom. Enjoy.
Why is it, the more expensive the hotel, the more they rape you on everything? I’m staying at a \$300 a night place, and they want \$5.00 for a bottle of water, \$3.00 for a soda and \$10 for internet for twenty-four hours. Hotel Avante in Mountain View is \$155 a night and they give me free internet and free water. Westin? Not stayin’ with you again.
